Tianjin University (TJU) is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Founded in 1895 then Peiyang University was renamed Tianjin University in 1951 by the National Department. It was one of the first batches of 16 national key universities identified by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1959. In addition, TJU entered into the first batch of “211 Project” and “985 Project”.
In terms of discipline construction, TJU has formed a discipline layout that mainly bases on technology, combines science with engineering, develops economics, management, literature, law, and education coordinately. There are 64 undergraduate majors, 37 first-level master’s degree programs, 28 first-level doctoral programs, and 23 post-doctoral research stations. In the results of the 2018 Discipline Assessment published by the Ministry of Education and the Graduate Education Development Center (the fourth round of assessment), 25 first-level disciplines of TJU participated in the survey, and 14 disciplines entered the A-category, accounting for 56% of the total number of participating disciplines. In 2017, TJU was listed on Class A of the “Double First-Class” initiative construction universities.
